A leopardess attacked a group of men in Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol district on October 20 after they provoked the wild animal. Videos of the incident have gone viral on social media.
The group, which gathered near the Son river for a picnic, spotted the leopardess nearby. As they walked towards the big cat and started recording the scene on their phones, they ended up provoking the animal.
Some of the members of the group could be heard saying, “aa jaa, aa jaa [come towards us].” However, it is not clear from the videos whether they were asking their friends to return or were taunting the animal.
One of the men, in fact, asked others in the group to refrain from going near the leopardess, but two people continued to walk towards the wild animal irrespective – until the leopardess charged.
One of the videos showed the leopardess suddenly springing from behind the bushes, racing towards the group at full speed.
There was utter chaos, and the men screamed in panic, “Aa raha hai, arey aa raha hai [It is coming towards us],” as the leopardess pounced, sinking its claws into one of the men, targeting his neck.
Others ran for their lives, screaming in an attempt to fend off the attack. Eventually, the leopardess retreated into the forest, as several people rushed to aid the injured men.

Locals speculate that the leopardess may have recently given birth to cubs, which likely triggered her aggressive behaviour. Following the attack, the injured were rushed to Shahdol Medical College for treatment.
The picnic spot, located near Khitauli village about 20 km from Shahdol city, is a popular destination where visitors often gather on the banks of the Son river.
